Fort William — 67 Munros
The heavyweight. Ben Nevis (1,345m, Britain’s highest), the arc of the Mamores, the Grey Corries, Glen Coe’s scrambly ridges and the remote hills of Knoydart — nowhere else packs in so many big days.
Cairngorms — 54 Munros
Britain’s arctic plateau: five of the six highest Munros, including Ben Macdui (1,309m) and Braeriach (1,296m), rise above vast gravel plateaux and ancient pine forest.
Perthshire — 28 Munros
The gentle(r) south: Ben Lawers (1,214m) above Loch Tay, the Tarmachan ridge, and the perfect cone of Schiehallion — many a first Munro.
Kintail — 24 Munros
Ridge-walking heaven around Glen Shiel: the Five Sisters, the South Glen Shiel Ridge (seven Munros in a day) and the Forcan Ridge on The Saddle.
Ullapool — 24 Munros
The Fannichs, the Fisherfield wilderness — home of remote A’ Mhaighdean — and the pinnacled castle of An Teallach.
Argyll — 19 Munros
Ben Lui (1,131m), the Arrochar Alps’ rugged Ben Ime, and Ben Cruachan’s horseshoe above Loch Awe.
Loch Ness — 17 Munros
North of the Great Glen: Carn Eige (1,183m), the highest ground north of it, plus the great Affric and Mullardoch ridges.
Torridon — 17 Munros
Sandstone monsters — Liathach, Beinn Eighe, Beinn Alligin — rising straight from sea lochs. Small in number, giant in character.
Loch Lomond — 14 Munros
The most accessible group from Glasgow: Ben Lomond, the Crianlarich hills around Ben More (1,174m), and Loch Earn’s Ben Vorlich.
Islands — 13 Munros
Twelve on Skye’s Black Cuillin — including the notorious Inaccessible Pinnacle — plus Ben More on Mull, the only island Munro outside Skye.
Angus — 3 Munros
The rolling hills above the Angus glens: Driesh, Mayar and Lochnagar’s neighbouring plateau country on the Deeside boundary.
Sutherland — 2 Munros
The far north’s lonely pair: Ben Hope, the most northerly Munro, and Ben Klibreck rising alone from the Flow Country.
